First Higher School of Economics and University of Rome Tor Vergata Workshop in Applied Economics

13 June 2019, First Higher School of Economica, Moscow, Russia

The First Higher School of Economics/University of Rome Tor Vergata Workshop in Applied Economics brings together researchers from the two universities to present and discuss research in applied economics at an early stage of the research. The topics presented at this first workshop straddle a wide range of research areas in economics, touching on political economy issues of migration, regional convergence in Russia, human capital formation in transition countries, the impact of air pollution on birth outcomes, and the nexus between self-perception in society and actual behavior. The presented research provides important evidence on issues that are of great importance to policy makers enabling them in the final analysis to make evidence-based sound political choices.

"Moving upstream the “relevant” migration frontier. Strategic priorities to turn the migration challenge into a development opportunity"

Laura Frigenti* and Furio C. Rosati**

Migration is one of the most pressing issues on the international political agenda. Despite its current immediate emergency, however, migration is the result of long-term factors and very likely to last for many decades ahead. This calls for a new and more integrated approach to international migration, deeply rooted in sound empirical evidence of the complex dynamics driving people global mobility and emphasizing the key role of countries of origin as the centre of gravity of current and future migration policies and interventions to turn the migration challenge into a development opportunity for both origin and destination economies.
