On Friday, October 13, ICID's director, Furio Rosati will join the Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS) and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in a public panel about the impact of migration on Europe. On Friday, October 13, at 3:00 pm EST, ICID’s director Furio Rosati will participate in a public panel discussion of the impact of migration on Europe, hosted by the Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS) in collaboration with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS). The event takes place at CSIS headquarters in Washington DC,  during the week of the IMF - World Bank Annual Meetings.

Rosati will discuss about how to develop an effective and sustainable approach to migration together with Laura Frigenti (Director for AICS), Sir Paul Collier (Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Oxford), Jonathan Prentice (Chief of Staff for the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for International Migration at the United Nations), Father Richard Ryscavage, (School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University), and Daniel F. Runde, (William A. Schreyer Chair and Director, Project on Prosperity and Development, CSIS).

The panel topic echoes ICID’s most recent report, “Towards Sustainable Migration. Interventions in countries of origin”. In the report, ICID highlights the need for an innovative and integrated approach which moves the relevant “frontier” for migration to the countries of origin. The report, carried out jointly with AICS, identifies a coordinated set of actions aiming to achieve sustainable migration flows, made of people moving as a result of a free choice and well-prepared for the labour market and the cultural challenges expecting them in the destination country.

You can find the whole report here and follow the live streaming of the discussion on CSIS web page.

"Moving upstream the “relevant” migration frontier. Strategic priorities to turn the migration challenge into a development opportunity"

Laura Frigenti* and Furio C. Rosati**

Migration is one of the most pressing issues on the international political agenda. Despite its current immediate emergency, however, migration is the result of long-term factors and very likely to last for many decades ahead. This calls for a new and more integrated approach to international migration, deeply rooted in sound empirical evidence of the complex dynamics driving people global mobility and emphasizing the key role of countries of origin as the centre of gravity of current and future migration policies and interventions to turn the migration challenge into a development opportunity for both origin and destination economies.
