Session VI - Climate Change and Development 27/10/2017 11:45 - 13:15

Inflows and outflows of climate migrants: the impact on local conflict

Migration is an important channel of adaptation where climate change threatens livelihoods
At the same time climate-induced migrants may interact with resources and populations of the receiving regions in a way that gives rise to social unrest. The paper postulates the existence of two potential mechanisms. First, climate-migrant may trigger new conflicts or fuel existing ones in receiving countries. Second, we test if emigration represents an important adaptation strategy to climate change. We find no evidence of climate-induced migration’s influence on the incidence of civil conflicts in destination countries. While we find support to the hypothesis that migration outflows decrease the probability of unrest in countries where warming increases the risks of civil conflicts.
